BattleCom:

Setup tips

The following is how to set up BattleCom using a game link which will allow non-multitasking sound cards to work with BattleCom. My suggestion is to follow the instructions and start with a 2000 ms delay. Basically what this does is switch between BC and AW, only problem is when you talk or someone talks to you you will loose your AW sounds for the duration of the conversation. Small price to pay for having both sounds.

Should I Enable GameLink?

You only need to enable GameLink if you will be sharing the playback device of your soundcard between a game and BattleCom. If you have more than one soundcard in your PC and you have configured BattleCom to use a different playback device than your game, then you can disable GameLink. Also, if you are using the alternative playback system, GameLink is automatically disabled. Otherwise GameLink should be enabled.

Do I Need To Configure GameLink For Each Game I Work With?

In most cases games will work with BattleCom without having to modify your GameLink configuration. However if you find that when a game starts it mutes the sounds from BattleCom then the game will require a GameLink database entry.

How do I tell if I need to configure GameLink for a game?

BattleCom ships with support for many popular games. Check and see if the software is already configured with a GameLink entry for your particular game.

The first place you should look is the Software Compatibility List on the ShadowFactor web site. This list contains information on all the games which has been tested with BattleCom. For each game information on compatibility and GameLink settings is provided.

If a game is not listed you can try the following process to determine if a GameLink entry is required:

Start the game you want to use with BattleCom.
Switch back to the desktop using ALT-TAB or CTRL-ESC and run BattleCom.
Start a BattleCom test. (See How-To: Run a Test for details).
Make sure that you can hear your own voice echoed back to you once the connection has been made.
If you hear "GameLink Enabled" after the test has started then BattleCom has been pre-configured to work with this game and no further steps are necessary.
Switch back to the game window. (ALT-TAB or click on it's icon in the taskbar).
Speak into the microphone and determine if you can still hear your voice echoed back to you while the game is in the foreground.
If you can still hear your voice then you do not need to add a GameLink entry. If you can't hear your voice then you will need an entry.
If you are trying BattleCom with a game which isn't listed in the Software Compatibility List make sure to write us at scl@shadowfactor.com and let us know how it worked.

How do I create a GameLink entry?

To create a GameLink entry you need to know the name of the window that the game uses. To find the window name for a game do the following:

Run the game.
Switch back to the windows desktop. (Use ALT-TAB or CTRL-ESC)
Float your mouse over the game's icon in the taskbar. The tooltip displayed will be the name of the window.
If the window name changes throughout the life of the game you can use a wildcard in the window name.
Once you have the window name you can create a GameLink entry. To add an entry do the following:

Display the GameLink Database, it is found on the GameLink Tab of the Settings Dialog.
Click on the Add button. This will display the Game Definition Dialog.
Enter the name of the game into the Game Name field.
Enter the window name into the Window Name field.
Select "Game Normally Mutes External Applications" as the plug-in type.
Set the plug-in delay to 3000.
Press the OK button.
How do I know if GameLink is working?
GameLink operates when you are connected to or hosting a session and when you are running a test. Since GameLink operates in the same way whether you are connected or running a test it is simpler to test by running the software in test mode. To test a GameLink entry:

Run a BattleCom test. (For details see How-To: Run a Test).
Run the game you are testing.
If you hear the "GameLink enabled" voice prompt then GameLink has recognized the game.
Speak into the microphone and see if you can hear your voice echoed back to you mixed with the sounds from the game.
If you can hear your voice mixed in with the game sounds then your GameLink entry is configured correctly.
My GameLink entry didn't recognize the game when it started. What do I do?

Check to make sure that the GameLink entry's window name exactly matches the window name that the game uses. Although the window name isn't case sensitive it does have to have the same number of spaces/dashes and the same letters in order to recognize the name properly.

You may also use a wildcard in a window name. The wildcard character '*' tells GameLink to recognize the game if everything to the left of the wildcard matches. Therefore if the window name takes the form GAMEABC: XXX where XXX changes you could use GAMEABC: * as the window name.

If the window name does match try increasing the plug-in delay to see if that makes a difference.
